You need to keep the details on your NSW driver licence up to date, which includes making changes to your name or address when required. If you don’t keep these details updated, you could be hit with a $200 fine. To update your NSW licence, you’ll need to go to the Service NSW website and log in or create an account.

Correcting or Changing Your Name

After changing your legal name, you’re expected to attend a service centre within 14 calendar days so that you can update your NSW driver licence with your new name. When you visit the service centre, you’ll need to take several documents with you. These include:  

Proof of identity. The Transport for NSW website has more information on proving your identity.

  • The original copy of your change of name document, including:
  • Marriage certificate issued by the NSW Registry of Births, Deaths, and Marriages (BDM)
  • Change of name certificate issued by an Australian BDM
  • Birth certificate, which must include both your name at birth and current name, and it must have been issued by an Australian BDM
  • Deed poll, which must have been registered with the applicable authority (the NSW BDM)
  • Divorce document (where applicable)
  • Any applicable licence card or registration papers
  • Your Change of Records form. If you don’t have a copy of this form, you can complete it when you visit the service centre.

  • Prepare all the necessary documentation to change the name on your NSW licence.
  • Visit a service centre to submit your application. You can find a service centre on the Service NSW website.
 

Changing the Address on Your Licence

It’s simple to change the address on your NSW driver licence, and you can do so through your MyServiceNSW account. When you update your address through this portal, you’ll be updating the address for any:
  • Driver licence and vehicle registration(s)
  • Boat license and vessel registration(s)
  • RSA/RCG competency card and other records for liquor and/or gaming

Renewing or Replacing Your NSW Licence

Through the Transport for NSW website, you can also renew your driver licence or replacee if it has been lost or stolen. If eligible, you can renew your NSW driver licence online as early as 6 months before the expiry date. Your licence can be renewed for 1, 3 or 5 years. However, you will have to attend a service centre if one of the following applies:
  • You’d like to renew your licence for 10 years.
  • You hold an NSW learner licence.
  • You are overdue for a medical examination or other fitness to drive assessment.
  • You have a combined boat and driver licence.
  • You’ve also changed your address within the last 14 days.
Once you’ve submitted your application, your old driver licence will be returned to you by post, and you can continue to use it as identification for up to 2 years. You’ll also be given a temporary paper licence until your card arrives in the post.
